Notes

1. Taguieff developed the concept of bougisme (from bouger, to move) to refer to the way we are all now expected to keep ‘moving’ (i.e. be increasingly active in the globalized world of constant consumption, communication and exchange).

2. Loft Story was a French TV reality show (2001–2002), similar to Big Brother (though the French version aroused more overt hostility among the French than its UK equivalent among the British).

3. Tariq Ramadan (b. 1962) is a Swiss Muslim scholar whose views (which cannot easily be labelled as simply ‘reformist’, ‘fundamentalist’, etc.) have proved controversial.

4. Henri Queuille (1884–1970), from Corrèze (not far from Poitou, hence Houellebecq’s reference to ‘Poitevin’), was a distinguished politician from the Radical-Socialist Party.
